Hair Infections

At Glendale Dermatology, we understand that skin and hair go hand in hand. They work together as a combination to protect your body from the elements. They are also both subject to infections. If you or your loved ones are suffering from hair infections, Glendale Dermatology can help.

What Is a Hair Infection?

Sometimes an ingrown hair, a hair that is not growing in the right direction, can lead to an infection. However, when we talk about hair infections, we are most commonly talking about scalp infections, infections that occur on the skin of the scalp, where you have a large concentration of hair follicles that may also be affected. Hair infections can be uncomfortable and in some cases may lead to a more serious condition, so they should be treated as soon as possible.

Types of Hair Infections

There are many different types of hair infections that may require different types of treatment. The most common ones include:

  • Tinea Capitis – This is ringworm of the scalp. It is a fungal infection characterized by a ring shape. It spreads quite easily, is very contagious, and requires antifungal medication to treat.
  • Folliculitis – This hair infection can happen anywhere on the skin. When hair follicles are damaged, they create the opportunity for bacteria to enter the skin through the pores. Folliculitis is characterized by a red ring around the infected follicle, accompanied by pain and/or itching.
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis – A condition characterized by dry, flaking skin. The usual cause of dandruff.
  • Scalp PsoriasisPsoriasis that appears on the scalp.
